Bare Necessities

With increasingly erratic climate change patterns, the need to assess our ecosystems, and overhauling them to accommodate not only our needs, but also that of our environment, is imperative. Bare Necessities by Sahar Mansoor is a brand that aims to produce everyday products that do not contribute to the waste epidemic. When she returned to India, Sahar was overwhelmed by the sight of rag pickers rummaging through piles of trash. It made her introspect and reassess her outlook on the environment as well as the health and social justice issues related to waste. Sahar wanted change, but change begins at home. She read blogs on the subject, and had conversations with her grandmother about the way things were before disposable plastic was everywhere. The conversations about traditional ingredients made an indelible mark in Sahar’s mind, and that mark grew to become the blueprint of Bare Necessities. Bare Necessities started in 2017, selling just 15 products. Now, it has an array of 70+ products with 30000+ customers. Employing a cradle-to-cradle approach, Bare Necessities produces all its products with natural ingredients that do not contribute to waste or pollution in the environment. Moreover, the brand has a refill station in Bangalore where customers can have a refill. By using eco-friendly packaging, Bare Necessities has diverted 172,542 kgs of plastic from ending up in landfills. The brand has its own resource centre, named Bare Learning, where they offer courses and talks on sustainable business practices. The reach of these courses and educational workshops has been upwards of 200,000 people. Bare Necessitites is a #NICEEnterprise, that won the NICE Aarohana Business Plan Competition (Growth) in 2021.
