Piglet Entrepreneurship

Mahabir Soren, a 46 year old from the Kajri village of the Churchu block in Jharkhand, was a farmer and a casual labourer looking for an opportunity to increase his income to provide a better future to his children. In 2015, he availed the opportunity to join the Lakhpati Kisan program launched by CInI (an initiative of Tata Trusts) to enhance his income and quality of life. He went on to become a ‘Pig Entrepreneur’ in 2019 with 8 pigs. Initially, he had to face difficulties in terms of the investment required to feed and take care of the pigs for healthy offsprings which was around 1.58 lakhs. He also took a loan of 70,000 rupees, 45% of which he has been able to repay successfully. Mahabir persevered and applied the technical expertise which he gained from the training provided by CInI on pig rearing and care to successfully sell 42 piglets in 2020 and 54 piglets in 2021. Currently, he has an annual income of 1.51 lakhs from the pig business. He caters to around 250 households and uses specialized pig feed from Godrej Agrovet for better health and nutrition of the pigs. He aspires to move ahead in life from 1 to 4 pig farms in the future.
