Polyhouse Entrepreneurship

Rajendra Tudu is a 40 year old farmer turned entrepreneur from the Nagri village of the Churchu block in Jharkhand. He had never dreamed of being anything other than a farmer and an occasional labourer all his life. However, in 2015 he availed the opportunity to join the Lakhpati Kisan program launched by CInI (an initiative of Tata Trusts) to enhance his income. In 2017, he took the decision to become a ‘Polyhouse Entrepreneur’ and since then there has been no looking back. As a polyhouse entrepreneur, Rajendra has a nursery for growing soilless saplings using cocopeat as the alternative as this reduces the risk of disease, increases productivity of crops and also saves time in the plant growth cycle. While the benefits of using soilless saplings were numerous, convincing the farmers to forgo the traditional soil based saplings was a major task. It was quite a challenge as he had to invest 3.50 lakhs and also take a loan of 1.20 lakhs. Rajendra supplied the saplings on credit for the first year to let the farmers see the benefits firsthand. This helped him gain the respect and goodwill of the farmers and set him on a path of success with demand for his saplings growing exponentially. He currently caters to 410 households and is able to earn 6.75 lakhs annually from this business. He has been able to foreclose 100% of his loan within the stipulated time period of 30 months. What keeps him motivated is the ability to actually achieve and even exceed whatever livelihood or income goals he sets his mind to with this business venture.
