Ramani Gorla

Cattle Feed Business Owner

A tailor by profession, Ramani is a graduate of SFI* and NIRDPR’s† first batch of agri-entrepreneurs (AEs), which was held exclusively for women from Andhra Pradesh in 2019. After completing her training, Ramani opened a digital payment outlet in DL Puram, a village under Nakkapalli block, Visakhapatnam – as the nearest bank was 8 km away.Ramani wanted to earn more than commissions to support her childrens' education but feared starting an enterprise. After discussing the matter with an Agri-Entrepreneur Mentor (AEM) and some of the local farmers, who agreed to buy cattle feed from her, Ramani started a cattle-feed business. Her income is a strong support to her husband, a daily-wage labourer at a cashew-processing unit. AEM Prasanna Kumar also helped her contact the fodder sellers at Anakapalle, a town 40 km away from DL Puram.“With supplies from Anakapalle, I am selling three varieties of value-added fodder in my village, giving competition to those already in the trade. This year I was able to earn ₹23,000,” said Ramani. She has also received a loan of ₹2 lakh from Avanti Finance and is operating a large-scale business now.*Syngenta Foundation India †National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj
