Cashew Market Linkage
Cashews take a long, winding road to get from farm to processing units and it passes through the hands of several intermediaries to do so. A high number of intermediaries results in low price realizations for farmers and proportionately high consumer prices.Aruna Kumari used her knowledge of market linkages to cut the middlemen after completing her agri-entrepreneur training at the Agri-Entrepreneur Growth Foundation. Hailing from a village dominated by tribal people in the district of West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh, Aruna used her contacts with the local smallholder farmers (SHFs) to collect raw cashews. She contacted the processing unit owners and supplied the produce to their collection points directly, charging a sales commission of ₹1 per kg.Aruna is working hard to strengthen her network of farmers. She has already roped in 117 farmers and sold 27 metric tonnes of cashews to processing units in 2021 - during the harvest season in June. Moreover, she is confident her team can help about 2000 farmers hailing from 45 tribal villages in the state by the next harvest season and procure 300 metric tonnes of raw cashews.
